Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone made a symbolic trip to Cuba just a day after President Fidel Castro resigned. The visit is in commemoration of Pope John Paul II's visit ten years ago.
So far the Church is taking an evangelical approach to things and is avoiding taking a critical stand with regards to Cuban society.
With the resignation of Fidel Castro, I believe the Catholic Church will be playing a vital role in strengthening the Catholic Church's presence in Cuba. Pope John Paul II's visit has definitely made a lasting impression on millions of Cubans who for many decades only saw a military leader speaking on the square.
Today the emphasis is on urging the state to allow the opening of Catholic schools and the possibility of allowing its message to spread through the state-run media.
My only hope is that Catholicism would be a major influence in Cuban affairs and that the gospel would again spread to the Cuban people without any hindrance from the government.
