Catholic Apologetics Cruise to Alaska

JIMMY, MARK, TIM, and JIM

(No, they're not the four Evangelists.
But close.
They're your apologist-guides to Alaska!)

Dear Future Cruiser:

How would you like to learn the ins and outs of your Catholic faith--what each doctrine means, where it is found in Scripture, how to answer tough questions, and just why we believe what we believe?

... and how would you like to learn all that from some of the country's top Catholic apologists?

... and how would you like to do so in beautiful Alaska?

Now you can, on the Catholic Answers Alaska Apologetics Cruise.

The dates are June 8-15, which means it's just around the corner. I urge you to sign up while preferred staterooms are still available!

(To go straight to our special web site about this and our other cruises, please visit http://www.catholicanswerscruise.com.)

JOIN TOP APOLOGISTS IN ALASKA

Okay, let me tell you about this spectacular cruise itself.

It's ideal for anyone who wants to learn the Catholic faith more deeply or who wants to learn how to share the faith with others.

The speakers are Catholic apologists whose names you know well. They include Tim Staples, Jimmy Akin, and Jim Blackburn of the Catholic Answers staff, plus guest speaker Mark Shea.

They will be joined by our cruise chaplain, Fr. John Trigilio, another great apologist and co-author of the immensely popular Catholicism for Dummies. Fr. Trigilio will celebrate Mass for us daily. (Confession also will be available daily.)

Not only will you hear great lectures by these five speakers, but you also will have plenty of opportunity to talk with them one-on-one, both on board the ship and on shore.

On this 8-day cruise you will have a chance to have all of your apologetical questions answered, and you also will enjoy some of the most impressive scenery in America.

You will sail on the stunning ms Westerdam, part of the Holland America Line.
The ship departs Seattle and visits Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan in Alaska and Victoria in British Columbia before returning to Seattle.

WHY SAIL WITH CATHOLIC ANSWERS?

A Catholic Answers cruise is more than just getting from here to there on a fine ship.

1.    On our Alaska Apologetics Cruise you will sail with convivial people who share your beliefs.

2.    You will build your spiritual life through daily Mass.

3.    You will learn so much about Catholic teachings that your faith will be deepened immeasurably.

4.    You will learn how to explain Catholic beliefs to others.

5.    You will have all of your own questions answered--plus all the questions put to you by your family and friends, whether Catholics or non-Catholics.

6.    You will learn from personable speakers who are experts in apologetics and who, like you, love and live their Catholic faith wholeheartedly.

What's more, you will get something other cruises don't offer: as much time as you need with the speakers.

Unlike what happens on some other cruises, our speakers will not just give their talks—and then disappear. That's not the way we operate.

Our speakers are available to our guests all day long.

You will have a chance to talk with them individually and at length, both on board the ship and during on-shore excursions.

HOW TO LEARN MORE AND HOW TO SIGN UP

To get full details about the Alaska Apologetics Cruise, please visit our special web site,
http://www.catholicanswerscruise.com.

Karl Keating's E-Letter

KARL KEATING'S E-LETTER

March 25, 2008

TOPIC: TWO PROFILES IN COURAGE

Dear Subscriber:

Samuel Johnson remarked that "when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully."

Let me put that in a contemporary context: When a man knows he is the object of a fatwa, he likely will make sure that he remains in the state of grace.

So my thinking went as I read about Magdi Allam, who was baptized by Pope Benedict XVI on the vigil of Easter. Allam is a deputy editor of "Corriere della Sera" ("Evening Courier"), Italy's largest-circulation newspaper, which is based in Milan and takes a center-right political stance.

Allam, 55, was born in Egypt and writes on Islam and on Arab politics and culture. He has been a supporter of Israel, has condemned Muslim fanatics, and has defended the Pope's Regensburg speech.

After Allam criticized Palestinian suicide bombings in 2003, threats were made on his life, and the Italian government provided him with a police guard, which he still has. He will need it all the more now that he has renounced Islam and become a Catholic.

Allam had been a nominal Muslim. He did not perform the customary five-times-a-day prayers facing Mecca, and he did not undertake the Ramadan fast. He did accompany his devout mother on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1991.

On Easter Sunday "Corriere della Sera" published Allam's open letter to the editor. Addressed to Paolo Mieli, the letter is a moving proclamation of faith. Let me quote a few passages from it. The translation is my own.

Allam said, "Yesterday evening I converted to the Catholic Christian religion, renouncing my previous Islamic faith. I finally saw the light, through divine grace, the healthy and ripe fruit of a long gestation lived in suffering and in joy ...

"I am particularly grateful to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, who has imparted to me the sacraments of initiation--baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist--in the Basilica of St. Peter in the course of the solemn celebration of the Easter vigil."

Then the new convert showed that he had no intention of playing down his adherence to his new faith. Referring to his baptismal name, he wrote: "I have assumed the most simple and explicit Christian name: 'Christian.' Since yesterday, therefore, my name is 'Magdi Christian Allam.'"

He continued this way:

"For me [this is] the most beautiful day of my life. To acquire the gift of the Christian faith on the memorial of the Resurrection of Christ from the hand of the Holy Father is, for a believer, an incomparable privilege and an inestimable good. ...

"[This is the] authentic religion of Truth, of Life, and of Liberty. In my first Easter as a Christian I not only have discovered Jesus but have discovered for the first time the true and unique God, who is the God of Faith and Reason."

These lines are a strong challenge to Islam, which emphasizes the uniqueness of Allah--so unique, so isolated, that in Islam the dogmas of the Trinity and the Incarnation can't be entertained in any way.

Allam is saying that the "true and unique God" is not to be found in Islam, which claims him but does not have him, and that the God of Islam is not really the God of faith and reason.

Later in his open letter Allam turned again explicitly to his newspaper's editor and wrote, "Dear editor, you ask whether I fear for my life in the consciousness that my conversion to Christianity certainly will obtain for me a death sentence for apostasy. You are quite right."

Allam said that he will "face my fate with head high, with back straight, and with interior sureness of one who has the certainty of his faith."

Then he said that "His Holiness has sent an explicit and revolutionary message to a Church that until now has been too prudent in the conversation with Muslims, refraining from evangelizing in countries with an Islamic majority and being quiet about the reality of conversions in Christian countries. Out of fear. Fear of not being able to protect converts from condemnation to death for apostasy [from Islam] and fear of reprisals against Christian residents of Islamic countries.

"Well then, today Benedict XVI, with his testimony, says we need to overcome the fear and not be timorous in the affirmation of the truth of Jesus even among the Muslims. ...

"In Italy there are thousands of converts to Islam who serenely live their new faith. But there also are thousands of Muslim converts to Christianity who are impelled to conceal their new faith out of fear of being assassinated by Islamic extremists who hide among us."

Allam concluded his open letter by saying that he hopes the "historic gesture of the Pope and my testimony will bring out the conviction that the moment has arrived to leave the shadows of the catacombs and to affirm publicly our will to be fully what we are.

"If we cannot have here in Italy, in the cradle of Catholicism, our home, a guarantee of full religious liberty, how will we ever be able to be credible when we denounce the violation of such liberty elsewhere in the world?"

NOT EVERYONE WAS PLEASED

As you might expect, not everyone has applauded Allam's conversion. Yahya Pallavicini, the vice president of the Islamic Religious Community in Italy, said that "there is no need, to demonstrate love for Jesus, to renounce the faith of the Prophet Mohammed."

Pallavicini said it was unfortunate that Allam was baptized in such a public manner; he thought it would have been better had it been done by "a priest in Viterbo," where Allam lives.

He went on to say that he did not understand how one could "renounce the tradition, the culture, and the truthfulness of the Islamic message," and he accused Allam of "apostasy."

The irony is that Pallavicini himself is an apostate: He was brought up as a Catholic!

THE OTHER COURAGEOUS MAN

I titled this E-Letter "Two Profiles in Courage" because not only has Allam done a courageous thing, putting himself even deeper into jeopardy, but so has the man who completed Allam's reception into the Church: Pope Benedict XVI.

It would have been easy enough for the Pope to indicate that Allam should have been received into the Church by his parish priest--that, after all, is what is done almost universally. It could not have been an accident that Allam was one of only seven converts who were baptized in St. Peter's by the Pope.

No, the Pope was sending a message, very much in line, I think, with what Allam wrote in his open letter. The message is that Muslims too ought to become Catholics and that Catholics ought to proclaim that truth, even at the risk of (or at the near certainty of) reprisals.

Islam is further removed from Catholicism than is Judaism; Judaism is further removed than is Protestantism. We have little trouble inviting Protestants to complete their faith by becoming Catholics. We invite Jews to do the same (as emphasized by the Pope's recent revision of the prayer, used at Good Friday in the Tridentine Mass, that calls for prayers that Jews may convert).

The further away from Catholicism someone is, the more he needs it. It would be an act of uncharity to Muslims to leave them out of the picture. Allam thinks that Catholics have a duty to invite Muslims to become Catholics. Not only does the Pope think the same way, but he has put himself at risk in affirming this message.

That's why we say, with joy, "Habemus papam!"

FOOTNOTE

Writing about the breaking story at GetReligion.org, contributor Mollie Ziegler sought to correct phrasing used by Reuter's Philip Pullella in his report of Allam's conversion.

She said that his opening paragraph "makes a common error that might not seem important but is. While baptism confers membership into a specific church body, people aren't baptized a Lutheran, Presbyterian, or Catholic. They baptized into the Christian faith. ... On the radio and television, however, I and a few readers kept hearing about this 'baptized a Catholic' terminology. It takes a few more words, but it's important to be precise when dealing with sacraments."

I agree it's important, so I hope Ziegler will not mind if I correct her.

There is only one baptism, Scripture tells us. There also is only one Church established by Christ. That Church is the Catholic Church, which means that baptism is Catholic baptism, there being no other.

When a person is baptized, he actually is baptized into the Church that Christ founded, which means he is baptized into the Catholic Church--whether or not he understands that.

Thus, an infant baptized at a Methodist church is a Catholic, until, at some later point, he comes to understand himself to be a Methodist or something else.

An adult who is baptized at a Methodist church would cease to be a Catholic almost instantaneously, since he would understand himself to be, even during the ceremony, a Methodist.

However that may be, the fact is that baptism is a Catholic sacrament, as are all the other sacraments. Thus it is quite right for someone to say that Magdi Allam was baptized into the Catholic Church--because that is precisely what happened.

Until next time,

Karl

LESSON 3: GOD AND THE HOLY TRINITY

"Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How
incomprehensible are His judgments and how unsearchable His ways! For who
hath known the mind of the Lord, or who hath been His counsellor? Or who
hath first given to Him, and recompense shall be made Him? For of Him and
by Him and in Him, are all things; to Him be glory forever. Amen." (Romans
11:33-36)

1. Who is God?
God is the Supreme Being, the Creator, "who made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all things that are in them." (Psalm 145:5)

2. What does "Creator" mean?
It means that God made all things out of nothing.

"I beseech thee, my son, look upon Heaven and earth, and all that is in
them: and consider that God made them out of nothing, and mankind also."
(2 Machabees 7:28)

3. What is a creature?
A creature is anything made by God.

4. How do you know there is a God?
If you just examine the things in this world, you have to admit that
someone had to make them.

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee: and the birds of the
air, and they shall tell thee. Speak to the earth, and it shall answer
thee: and the fishes of the sea shall tell. Who is ignorant that the hand
of the Lord hath made all these things?" (Job 12:7-9)

"The fool hath said in his heart: There is no God." (Psalm 13:1)

5. Why can you not see God?
Because He has no body.

"God is a spirit." (John 4:24)

6. Where is God?
God is everywhere.

"Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy face?
If I ascend into heaven, Thou are there: if I descend into hell, Thou art
present." (Psalm 138:7-8)

7. Can God see all things?
Yes, because He is everywhere.

"The eyes of the Lord in every place behold the good and the evil."
(Proverbs 18:3)

8. How old is God?
God is ageless, eternal, which means that He had no beginning and will
have no end and will never change.

"Before the mountains were made, or the earth and the world was formed: from
eternity and to eternity thou art God." (Psalm 89:2)

9. Can God do all things?
Yes, "With God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26)

10. Is God alive?
Yes, He is alive and is the source of life. Over 30 Bible references
call Him "the living God."

"All things were made by Him: and without Him was made nothing that was
made. In Him is life." (John 1:3-4)

11. Is God independent and unlimited?
Yes, He depends on nothing and is unlimited (infinite) in every way.

"Neither is He served with men's hands, as though he needed any thing;
seeing it is He who giveth to all life, and breath, and all things." (Acts
17:25)

12. Is God interested in you?
Yes, and He loves you with an unlimited love.

"Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her
womb? and if she should forget, yet I will not forget thee." (Isaias
49:15)

13. Will God forgive you your sins?
Yes, if you are truly sorry for them.

"For the Lord your God is merciful, and will not turn away His face from
you, if you return to Him." (2 Paralipomenon 30:9)

14. What is the Holy Trinity?
This means that there are three persons in One God.

"Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." (Matthew 28:19)

15. Who are the three persons in God?
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.

"And there are three who give testimony in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and
the Holy Ghost. And these three are one." (I John 5:7)

16. Are the three persons of the Holy Trinity equal?
Yes, they are equal to One Another, but each One is a separate and
distinct Person, and each One is God.

17. How can there be three persons in only one God?
This is a mystery that no human mind can completely understand.

PRACTICAL POINTS

1. There are many things in this world which the human mind cannot
understand, such as growth, sight, hearing, electricity. Therefore, we
should not be surprised to find that we cannot completely understand the God
who made the world.
2. Faith is accepting something on the word of another. God says that there
are three Persons in One God. If you accept that statement as being true
because He said so, then you have faith.
3. Faith is not unreasonable if what you are told is possible and if the
person telling you is usually truthful and has nothing to gain by telling
you a lie.
4. Human beings can tell lies, but God cannot because He is Truth Itself.
Therefore, believing anything God says is the highest kind of faith. This
kind of faith, however, is a gift that you must pray for.

LESSON 4: PRAYER

"Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it
shall be opened to you. For every one that asketh, receiveth: and he that
seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened. Or what
man is there among you, of whom if his son shall ask bread, will he reach
him a stone? Or if he shall ask him a fish, will he reach him a serpent?
If you then being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children: how
much more will your Father who is in Heaven, give good things to them that
ask Him?" (Matthew 7:7-11)

1. What is prayer?
Prayer is the raising of the mind and heart to God.

2. Why should you pray?
You should pray--
i. To adore God, to tell Him that He made you and that you depend upon Him
for absolutely everything.
ii. To thank God for the blessings He has given you.
"What hast thou not received? And if thou hast received, why dost thou
glory, as if thou hadst not received it?" (1 Corinthians 4:7)
iii. To ask God pardon for your sins.
"O God, be merciful to me a sinner." (Luke 18:13)
iv. To ask God's help in all things.

"Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it
shall be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7).

3. When should you pray?
Every day, especially--
i. In the morning -- to offer the day to God and to ask for His help in the
temptations of the day
ii. During the day, especially during temptations.
iii. At night -- to thank God for the blessings of the day and to ask Him to
forgive you for the sins committed that day.
iv. Before and after meals.

4. To whom should you pray?
i. To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.
ii. You may also pray to the Blessed Virgin, the Angels and the Saints.

"And the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up
before God from the hand of the angel." (Apocalypse 8:4).

5. Why may you pray to the Blessed Virgin (Mary, Mother of God), the Angels
and the Saints?
Because they are God's best friends; God will listen to them more than
to us who are still sinners.

"Go to my servant Job, and offer yourselves a holocaust: and my servant Job
shall pray for you: his face I will accept, that folly be not imputed to
you: for you have not spoken right things before me, as my servant Job
hath." (Job 42:8)

6. For whom should you pray?
i. For everyone still on earth, even your enemies.
"But I say to you, love your enemies: do good to them who hate you: and
pray for them that persecute and calumniate you." (Matthew 5:44)
ii. For the souls in Purgatory (See Lesson 12).

7. What should you pray for?
Everyday pray to get into Heaven; when praying for anything else, always
say, "Grant this request, Lord, if it is Your will."

"For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth
that you have need of all these things. Seek ye therefore first the kingdom
of God, and His justice, and all these things shall be added unto you."
(Matthew 6:32-33).

8. Does God always hear your prayers?
Yes, but He does not always give what you ask for, because you sometimes
ask for things that are bad for you, or you do not ask God properly.
9. Does God hear or answer the prayers of sinners who are living in mortal
sin (someone who has committed one or more bad sins, such as taking birth
control or rejecting God's Church, without confessing them, thus becoming an
enemy of God)?
He hears their prayers for the grace of true repentance (the grace to
feel sorry for your sins and confess them to a priest), but He does not hear
their prayers for other favors, unless they are willing to give up their
sins and do penance.

"Now we know that God doth not hear sinners: but if a man be a server of
God, and doth His will, him He heareth." (John 9:31)

10. Should only good people pray?
No, everyone should pray. Especially should mortal sinners pray to be
delivered from their sins.

"I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn
from his way, and live." (Ezechiel 33:11).
"For every one that asketh, receiveth." (Matthew 7:8)

11. How should you pray?
i. With attention, keeping your mind on your prayer.
ii. With humility, realizing that you are powerless without God.
iii. With confidence, realizing that God can do all things.
iv. With perseverance, without giving up hope.

"And this is the confidence which we have Towards Him: That, whatsoever we
shall ask according to His will, He heareth us." (I John 5:14).

12. Why is public prayer necessary?
Because, as members of human society, we owe God public recognition of
Him as Supreme Master of society.

13. How does public prayer help the world?
We thereby call down God's mercy upon our country and world.
We also obtain the divine help which is necessary for virtue and peace in
society.

14. Why should a family pray together?
i. To obtain the graces they need, especially the grace to keep the Catholic
Faith.
ii. To ask God to bless them as a family.
iii. To imitate the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph).
iv. To give good example to the children.
v. To keep the family together.

"For where there are two or three gathered together in My name, there am I
in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20).

15. How often should a family pray together?
At least once a day, preferably after the evening meal, when all the
members of the family are together.

"A family that prays together stays together." (Father Peyton).

16. Why do Catholics have statues and pictures of Our Lord (Jesus), the
Blessed Virgin (Mary) and the Saints?
i. Because they wish to honor them, just as we honor public heroes.
ii. Because it is easier to pray to them when looking at a picture or a
statue of them.
iii. Because it helps Catholics raise their minds frequently to God during
the day.

PRACTICAL POINTS

1. There are two main kinds of prayer, vocal and mental. Vocal prayer uses
specific words, such as the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Mental prayer is
praying without words, which is also called meditation.
2. It is good to pray during the day with short prayers, such as, "Jesus, I
love You"; "My God, I offer this hour of work for my sins"; "My Jesus,
mercy."
3. It is not necessary to kneel while praying, but it certainly is much
easier to pray when you are on your knees.

PREFERRED STATEROOMS ARE BEING SNAPPED UP FAST

Are there family members and friends who have doubts about their religion--and who could use some friendly counsel from you?

If so, this cruise is just right for you--and for them!

The year was 1571 and the Ottoman Empire was on a roll, expanding its territory through conquest, and spreading Islam far and wide.

And as Sultan Selim II gathered together an enormous armada of 280 ships with which to invade Italy, a long held Ottoman dream seemed within reach—a dream toasted to before every military campaign— the dream of conquering Rome and transforming St. Peter's into a mosque.

What ensued was the Battle of Lepanto, a battle between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League, a rag-tag collection of sailors from across Christian Europe; a battle considered by many historians to be the most important naval battle in history because of the impact it had on the future of the Christian West.

Europe held out little hope for this Holy League—bracing itself for the fleet's destruction and a subsequent Ottoman invasion.

However, thanks to the intervention of the Blessed Mother, when the smoke cleared, it was the Ottoman fleet that lay on the ocean's bottom. The Ottoman Empire's imperialistic ambitions were ruined, and the West was saved from the threat of Islam.

Lepanto: the Battle that Saved the West
by Christopher Check

*******************************************

And now you can hear the whole exciting story of this nearly-forgotten— but absolutely crucial—battle in Lepanto: the Battle that Saved the West, a new three-part audio series from Christopher Check, Executive Vice President of the Rockford Institute.

You'll be mesmerized as Check takes you through:

    • the dramatic, and often shocking, events that preceded the battle;

    • the fascinating characters on both sides of the struggle: from the terrifying, brutal, and bloodthirsty Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to the charming, handsome, and witty Don John who handed each of his men a rosary on the eve of battle;

    • exciting details of what transpired as the battle raged—the twists and turns, the unique strategies implemented, the death of the Turkish commander, and the capture of the Muslim's Sacred Banner, which legend held had been carried into battle by Muhammad himself;

    • the aftermath for both the Holy League and the nations of Europe.

You'll also discover:

    • why it's so crucial for Catholics to know the history of the Church's struggles with Islam;

    • the Battle for Malta: 700 Catholic soldiers battle 40,000 Turks—and win!

    • treachery, betrayal and slaughter on Cyprus. The Turks agree to terms and then turn to murder;

    • why Europe ignored the Pope's call for help—and how many of them actually aided the Ottoman war effort;

    • the surprising reason Venice had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Holy League;

    • a miraculous answer to prayer. A sudden shift in the wind just before the Battle of Lepanto begins changes the fortunes of the Holy League for the better;

    • why, despite evenly matched forces and equally brilliant generals, the Battle of Lepanto quickly became a rout;

    • the inspiring heroism of the Christian slaves bound to row the Turkish ships—and how they helped the Holy League achieve victory;

    • miracles on-board: A sword strikes a crucifix and the sword shatters; a crucifix twists itself to avoid a cannonball;

    • Sultan Selim II's twisted reaction to the death of Pius V— the man he forever blamed for the destruction of his fleet;

    • and much more!

You'll also be treated to Christopher Check's dramatic reading of G.K. Chesterton's inspiring and entertaining poem "Lepanto"—written in 1915 to commemorate the Holy League's victory—along with a brief analysis of the poem and why it's so important for Catholics to be familiar with it.

Lepanto by G.K Chesterton
edited by Dale Ahlquist

*************************************

And when you order the Lepanto CD set, we'll send you the book, Lepanto absolutely FREE! In it, you'll find G.K. Chesterton's masterpiece by the same name, as well as insightful commentaries and notes gathered by Chesterton expert, Dale Ahlquist.

Lepanto brings together not just the poem but also the historical background of the battle, a riveting account of the battle itself, and a discussion of its historical consequences. It also includes two essays by Chesterton himself.

These two products are everything you need to know about the great Battle of Lepanto and what it meant for the future of the Church and Western civilization.

It's an overlooked, but absolutely crucial bit of history that every Catholic should know about as Islam rises again all over the world.

Karl Keating's E-Letter

KARL KEATING'S E-LETTER

March 11, 2008

TOPIC: WHERE HAVE ALL THE CATHOLICS GONE?

Dear Subscriber:

Thought I had been kidnapped and spirited out of the country, did you? Wondered if anti-Catholic hooligans had restrained me, by force, from writing the E-Letter? No, it's more prosaic than that.

I've been laboring under those administrative duties that have to be dealt with, that can't be passed along to others, and that sometimes cascade upon you all at once. That's the penalty I get for starting an apostolate and then discovering--contrary to my expectations--that it continues to grow (and to have those pains that growth entails).

THE EXODUS THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION

When I first got involved in apologetics, more than twenty years ago, my attention was focused mainly on the Fundamentalist attack on the Church. There was good reason for such a focus.

In the 1980s, so far as I could determine, more than 100,000 Catholics in America had been leaving the Church each year for Fundamentalist churches. Some of those churches boasted that a majority of their congregants were one-time Catholics. A few even claimed that all of their members had been Catholic.

An exodus of 100,000 people per year is not insignificant, but it was not the only exodus the Church in America was experiencing. An even larger number of Catholics just dropped out, becoming "inactive Catholics" or "lapsed Catholics."

Despite all this, the number of Catholics kept rising, even in the 1980s. That chiefly was because of immigration (both legal and illegal), not so much because of a large number of births (there were births, but not so many that they could raise the Catholic proportion of the population by much) and not because of conversions (there were conversions, but not all that many).

Things have changed a bit in the last two decades.

Catholic births remain about the same, as does growth attributed to immigration. Today there is a more sophisticated methodology to deal with potential converts (RCIA), and there is more emphasis on convert making (though it isn't called that by Church officials).

STILL LEAVING, BUT NOT AS MANY TO "BIBLE CHURCHES"

Perhaps the greatest change is in the number of people leaving the Church. Many still leave, but the number seems to be shrinking. In part this may mean that the most disgruntled people already have opted out. But one thing is sure: Fewer people leave for Fundamentalism.

I like to think that the work performed by Catholic Answers has contributed to each of these categories, particularly with respect to the losses to Fundamentalism. (I should add that our mostly young staff has done its part to increase the number of infant baptisms!)

In 1988, when I entered this work full time, there were Fundamentalists who were coming into the Church, but their number was exceeded by far by those Catholics who were leaving the Church for Fundamentalism.

I have to work on the basis of anecdotal evidence here, but my sense is that today we have reached equilibrium, with the goings and comings now balanced. We may even have reached a favorable point in which there are more entries from Fundamentalism than exits to Fundamentalism. It's a change very pleasant to see!

A NEW SURVEY

That said, the current situation remains far from rosy. According to a recent study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the Catholic Church loses a greater proportion of its members than does any other major religion in America.

In recent years the Baptists lost a fair proportion of those brought up as Baptists. They became something else. The Methodists lost a smaller proportion of those brought up as Methodists. But Catholics lost the biggest proportion of all.

I have not seen the full study and so can't comment on its methodology, but I have to put a question mark by the results. The study says that today 23.9% of Americans identify themselves as Catholics, a figure that parallels other figures I have seen over the years. But the study says that 31.4% of the American population had been brought up in the Catholic Church. The difference--7.5% of the total American population--represents people who were Catholics as children but ceased to be Catholics as adults. Where did the 31.4% figure come from?

If the proportion of Catholics in the general population has been stable for decades, at around 23.9%, and if that number included children (which is did--and does), then how can one say that at some point during these years 31.4% of all Americans (or at least of child-age Americans) were Catholic--particularly when the Catholic birth rate wasn't much different from that of the rest of the population?

However we are to understand these numbers, one thing is for sure: Many Catholics leave the Church of their upbringing and become something else. This was true when I entered this work, and it remains true today.

Those who leave may be leaving in different proportions and may be ending up in different places than was the case a few decades ago, but the fact to keep in mind is that they are leaving. It's great to have fewer Catholics leave for Fundamentalism; it still is a problem to have any of them leave at all.

We still have lots of work to do.

Until next time,

Karl

Sail the Baltic (and learn your Catholic faith) with Karl Keating

SAIL THE BALTIC
WITH KARL KEATING
AND LEARN YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH
LIKE NEVER BEFORE!

(Our "classrooms" will be London, Oslo,
Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Tallinn,
Berlin, and St. Petersburg.)

Dear Fellow Catholic:

I invite you to join me this summer on a 12-day Northern European cruise that will deepen your faith, increase your knowledge of Catholic teachings and history, and widen your circle of Catholic friends.

This will be Catholic Answers' first-ever "Christian History Cruise." On it you will learn about the Church's past, present, and possible future from top Catholic speakers (and also from me).

Your faith will be deepened immeasurably.

You will learn not only what the Church teaches but why.

You will see how Catholic teachings have fared throughout history (sometimes up, sometimes down), and ...

You will get a good sense of Catholic prospects, both in Europe and in our own country.

What's more, you will come away with a whole new circle of friends who take their faith as seriously (and as joyfully) as you do.

(To go straight to our special web site about this and our other cruises, please visit http://www.catholicanswerscruise.com.

Copenhagen                                          St. Petersburg

WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE

For our Christian History Cruise we will sail on the ms Rotterdam, the flagship of the Holland America Line. This is a truly beautiful ship, recently retrofitted, very comfortable, and an ideal setting for our at-sea talks.

Our cruise will depart London on August 21 and will end in Copenhagen on September 2.

Along the way we will visit not only the Scandinavian capitals--Oslo, Helsinki, and Stockholm--but will spend two days in St. Petersburg. We also will visit Germany, stopping at Berlin's port, and will see Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.

(For detailed information about each of these cities, please go to our special web site:
http://www.catholicanswerscruise.com.)

WHO

Here are the speakers:

Thomas Howard is a convert to the faith and popular writer. His Evangelical Is Not Enough has brought many people into the Church--and that's just one of about a dozen books he has written.

Tom is a brilliant lecturer. Among Catholic speakers, he may be my favorite of all, so much do I appreciate his gentle wit, deep knowledge, and clarity of expression.

Christopher Check is the executive vice president of The Rockford Institute and is an expert in Catholic history--particularly military history.

Catholic Answers recently issued his audio CD set about the all-important Battle of Lepanto. This was the 1571 battle that prevented the Turks from overrunning Europe.

Chris is a frequent contributor to This Rock. He has written for us on Henry VIII's disastrous divorce, on Joan of Arc as military commander (and saint!), and on the heroic Cristero movement in early-twentieth-century Mexico.

James and Joanna Bogle live near London and are perhaps the leading orthodox Catholic lay couple in England. James leads the country's top lay-Catholic organization, and Joanna is interviewed frequently by the BBC and other media to get the "orthodox Catholic side" of major issues.

Between them, they have more than a dozen books to their credit, including the popular Come on In, It's Awful, a witty invitation to join the Catholic Church, and Heart for Europe, about the recently-beatified Emperor Charles of Austria-Hungary (the last really Catholic head of state in Europe).

Rounding out the list of speakers is Yours Truly. (The less said about me, the better, I suppose.)

Tallinn                                          Oslo

WHY

Northern Europe is not strongly Catholic today, but it once was.

1.    How did it first become Catholic?

2.    Why did it cease to be Catholic?

3.    How can it become Catholic again?

These are the questions that will underlie not just our on-board talks but also our on-shore excursions.

As we attempt to answer them, we will come to know better not only the tenets of our faith but also the thinking of those, both present and past, who have opposed Catholic teachings.

And lastly: BECAUSE

Sure, there is a serious side to this cruise. But there also is a joyful side--because ours is a joyful faith.

During this cruise we will enjoy one another's company in an immensely beautiful--and historically important--part of the world.

We will spend 12 days in the company of friendly people who share our faith and who want to live it well.

For most of us, after all, this will be a vacation as well as a learning experience.

I presume you intend to take a vacation this summer. Why not take it with Catholic Answers?

Many thanks for thinking of sailing with us!

Best wishes in Christ,

Karl Keating
President, Catholic Answers

Mendenhall Glacier

A SPECTACULAR CRUISE WITH SPECTACULAR APOLOGISTS

Now let me tell you about the cruise itself.

The dates are June 8-15, 2008. You will depart Seattle on the finely-appointed ms Westerdam of the Holland America Line. The ship will visit Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan in Alaska and Victoria in British Columbia before returning to Seattle.

While on board you'll have a chance to have all of your apologetical questions answered, and you also will enjoy some of the most impressive scenery in America. (In my opinion, of all the cruises that sail from American ports, the one to Alaska takes the prize for beauty.)

Our Alaska Apologetics Cruise is ideal for anyone who wants to learn the Catholic faith more deeply or who wants to learn how to share the faith with others.

Do you sometimes wonder just what particular Catholic beliefs mean?

Do you wish you had the right answer when someone asks you about our faith?

Do you want to help family members and friends who have doubts about their religion?

If so, this cruise is just right for you (and for them!).

IT'S ALSO JUST RIGHT FOR SCRIMPERS, FAMILIES, AND SINGLE TRAVELERS

This is our most affordable cruise and the easiest to get to for most Americans.

Its cost and its fine mix of shore excursions make it particularly suitable for families--there truly is something for everyone--and it is just right for those who travel on their own.

(If you wish to shave expenses by sharing a stateroom with a compatible roommate, we can arrange that for you.)

If you prefer to use the phone instead, call our agent, The Cruise Authority, at 1-800-707-1634 between 9:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. Eastern Time. Our friends there will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Best wishes in Christ,
